Gaines County was created on August 21, 1876 from the Bexar District but not formally organized until 1905.

The county seat is Seminole.

The county was named for James Gaines, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Gaines county is a leading producer of crude oil; farming and ranching are the most prominent occupations. In 2000, its population was 14,467. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,503 square miles (3,892 km²), of which 1,502 square miles (3,891 km²) is land and 1 square miles (1 km²) (0.03%) is water.
